DIY or Call a Pro for that Small Hole?

At some point we all make that mistake. We’re moving out, moving in and/or maybe just an error in judgment. But, at some point most of us will put a hole in the drywall. So, what’s our next step? Do we call some of the skilled drywall repair professionals to fix a small hole? Do we tackle it ourselves? With some directions followed and maybe a mistake or two we can get that hole fixed ourselves.

At any of the local or large corporation hardware stores you can purchase a drywall repair kit. They are made by all different companies. The best one that I can suggest is a kit that has everything that you will need. So, what will you need?

Typically included in the repair kit is as follows.

  • Putty knife

  • Spackling compound

  • Repair screen

  • Fiber tape

  • Sanding pad

All these items can be purchased separately if the hole in question is larger than the specified kit. Typically, each kit has a maximum sized hole to repair. What isn’t included is matching paint to paint after the repair correctly.

It’s imperative that you follow the directions that are given. As well you will need to know what's the best kit to buy for your needs. In most cases that is listed clearly.

Here is the brief overview of the installation:

  1. Clean the damaged area. Sand and clean both the inside and the outside. Make sure the area is as smooth as possible.

  2. Install the repair screen inside the hole and in some cases, you have a strap or other devices to hold it secure.

  3. Use the putty knife to fill in the hole. Some companies have specific instructions on how to use the putty.

  4. Once the hole is filled and has dried it will need to sand down to smooth the surface. Depending on the size of the hole may need to add texture.

  5. Now it is time to paint. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for the paint.

While this isn’t a complete instruction, I always recommend knowing the size of the hole that needs to be repaired and get to know the instructions of the manufacturer you are using. Take your time and follow the instructions. If you feel that you're unable to complete the repair, call the drywall repair experts in Orlando and let them handle it for you.
